one from my first photo book which i still really like. i remember watching a youtube video by Jamie Windsor on “why bad photographers think they’re good” discussing cognitive bias and an artists perspective on their own work.
in that video though he states that one of the steps of avoiding being trapped in a psychological cycle of progression stunting behavior is to let go of old work. to move forward and to stop looking back on which were once upon a time your best shots. i agree with this.
however, something i personally enjoy doing, quite often actually, IS looking back on old work. it’s not only something i do when i’m stuck in a creative rut, to remind myself of a time when i was flourishing, but also a way to look back and see visual growth, so it helps with confidence as well, and really puts things into perspective on if i am heading in a direction i truly want to be headed.
